Gear shift **** removal?

Happy Turkey Day to all. Having trouble removing the ball **** on my shifter. I have the auto trans with the original black ball type shifter. The ball will unscrew, but will not remove from the shaft, due to the chrome push button in the center. Also the red needle is stuck on my climate control system, on the temp side. Could this be related to the vacuum system issues I have from time to time? Thanks. Sorry, it's a 72 roadster

You have to unsrew the chrome button.there is a spring under it. Then unsrew the black ball.

The indicators are connected to the dial with a small string. There is a great post somewhere on here that shows it in detail and how to recondition it.
