I took the gas tank out of an 81 today to repair a leak. I was pretty surprised when it sort of fell out when I took out the crossmember. Anyway, my question is, it looks like there are three pieces of something that looks about like roofing felt,(one across the front, one on the back crossmember and I suppose one on the crossmember under the tank. OK but a piece of rubber about an inch thick 4 inches wide and 42 inches long fell out from above the front somewhere.
Where does this glue? On the body, tank or what. Looks like it should be somewhere at the top front corner, but as I said, it was loose, bent and fell out.
Had tanks out of one of my 78s and one of my 79s just last month. Only had the 2 felt strips, one on the removable crossmember and one on the rear most crossmember. Nothing like the 1" thick one you describe. Maybe an 81/82 part or a Bowling Green applied piece.
I had a license plate light fixture fall out from atop one of my tanks. Been laying up there for 30 years.
For the felt, use 30lb roofing paper, it's the same stuff.
The other part you are asking about was called a fuel tank insulator! It belongs on the forward edge of the tank. IF you go to this link you'll see what I'm talking about. It's on page three. http://willcoxcorvette.com/repairand...lp.php?hID=246
Seeing where it sits on the tank helps. I also found it in the assembly manual. I will have to go about this backwards and glue it under the body and then lift the tank up since it is on the outside of the straps. Also, it appears to sit flat on top so that tells me where to glue.
I always keep crap around here, but guess what, no felt. Off to home depot for a small roll. I will glue one strip on the middle and rear crossmember and one on the tank in the front under the straps. Darrel
