Default DS headlight opens too far

My driver side headlight opens too far and the bucket is hitting the back of the opening in the clip. I have about a 2" section of chipped paint on the edge of this opening now! When they're closed, they line up perfectly flush with the clip and the gaps are all even. It's only a problem when they open.

Is it possible to adjust the position of the bucket when it's "open" without affecting the position of the bucket when it's "closed"?

should be a "stop" under there that will adjust the opening without affecting the close. Check the service AIM for the schematic on where it all is. what i do know off hand if that the big bolt in the middle under there will adjust how far the come down. you can see it all by laying under the front and looking straight up

Default rubber

There should also be a rubber cushion over the stop adjustment bolt, prevents metal to metal contact and surpresses the noise of the contact. New ones are softer, just like new tires feel so good driving the car, the rubber has not aged.

Also make sure the panel behind the bucket is not up too high. They have a habit of separating and springing up.

Hi Chris,
There are 2 different stops, one for open and one for closed.
The one for open is the flat headed screw that 1 Nice and 70Z mentioned. It's mounted on the long flat 'arm' that's mounted to the outer side edge of each headlight door. 71 AIM, UPC 12, Sheet A 3.
If the headlight support hasn't separated like DW mentions it should be an easy fix.
Regards,
Alan

Also check to see the HL support bolts are in place. My 72 was hit before I bought the car in '78 and who ever repaired it didn't put the bolts back in and support was loose.

Hi 1NC,
I described the up stop in my post. It's the flat headed bolt at the end of the 7" long 'arm' that attaches to the outboard side of the headlight door. The rubber bumper goes over the flat head.
