Does anyone know the requlations, or where they might be, for a re-assembled vehicle? Salvage yard types or wrecked cars in which 1-2 of the three major compnents, motor, body or frame, have been replaced. I believe companies that re-assemble vehicles for sale, have the car re-titled as such and the emissions standards aree not the same. Maybe I dreamed that, but hopefully, somone might know more about this. I think the same/similar thing applied to kit cars, if assembled by the owner.
Adam-Yes you should be required to carry insurance, but inspecting a 5 year old car is crap. Maybe a span of 10 to 15 to make sure you are maintaining the car, but that's it. It's a waste of time and money.
I see pieces of crap driving down the road with tape over the tail light lenses and bald tires. These people should be stopped ticketed and give ten days to re-apply for a new sticker. The police should carry a razor blade to remove the sticker on the spot, forcing them to comply.
Friend of my just combined about 3 different 96 for Ranger PU's and had heck getting it approved for a VIN. Lessons learned.
First get the rules from the Texas DPS state inspection office
Document the project, pictures, and all receipts
Never remove a VIN on any part and again keep the receipts.
If you buy parts with VIN on it, make sure the receipt reflects the VIN
Plan on a several day inspection for a new VIN.
A salvaged title vehicle must be inspected by the Texas DPS inspection office before it can be tagged or you get a state inspection sticker
I have a 1980 vette with ZZ4, but this is in regards to a diesel car (MB 1985 300D turbo diesel). This is my daily when the weather is bad. The car has 260K miles and still runs good for now.
The questions is: I'm thinking about putting a chevy 350 crate motor and 700R in the car since the ZZ4 truned out so well, so if it's a diesel, I don't think it will ever need an emissions inspection in Collin county Texas if they ever put it in place or the rest of Texas. Is this true?
I believe its not quite legal to switch a car from diesel to gas power if the engine that you are putting into the chassis wasn't an origional option. If you really want to put the 350 in the 300D (I dont know why, I had a '76 300D with 280K miles or so on the engine and still ran strong) You would have to recreate the emission system from a newer model year than you car and be held to those higher standards.
Hmmm.... good point. If they dont need to pop the hood, they'd never find out. Just don't put sidepips on the car or anything to make it too obvious :jester
