you might be able to fit cats in if you just do shorty headers.. the long tubes like hooker place the collector on the side of the car (visible), so any cat after that would also be visible.

so maybe a shorty with a custom intermediate to a single pipe down each side.. it will depend on other things, like if you have p/s, p/b, etc..

i'm sure somebody has done it..

California goes back 30 years? Are you kidding me?

How old does a car have to be to be exempt?

never, they want everyone to drive a prius.

As for the side pipes, I haven't seen anyone use a catalytic converter with sidepipes but it'd be very easy to do with a traditional longtube header/rear exhaust setup. Hopefully someone else will chime in

Anything can be accomplished with enough money and patience. I never seen it done but why not a long collector, tied to a cat, then a short tube, then a 180 u-bend pipe coming back towards the front of the car to the edge of the wheel well, then a 90 degree pipe connected to the side-pipes. ( on each side). I think it can be done but you'd probably lose power with al the restriction.
It would be easier to place true duals and a cat on each dual.

I meant a cat on each exhaust pipe coming from the manifold/header.

Forget it. Either go ahead and install the sidepipes without converters, keeping the stock setup for the smog checks, or leave it alone.

I've gone as far as changing engines every two years. My '68 GT/CS had a blown 351 with a toploader in it, except for about one month every two years when the stock, matching numbers 289-2V went back in just to smog it. One guy did ask about the extra hardware in the engine compartment (electroniv ign. box, boost gauges, etc..) and the hole in the hood, but it had nothing to do with the smog, so he passed it. Couple days labor and I was back in bussiness!

'75 and older are exempt from bienial checks now in CA

If you are in California side pipes will fail. PERIOD. No C.A.R.B. number ( California Air Resource board). The catalytic converter must be in the factory location for it to pass and exhaust can not be modified in any way. So every 2 years you'll have to change them back to stock to pass should you choose sidepipes

Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure modifying a car for dual exhaust that was originally designed without dual exhaust is against the rules in California.

It's not about if the configuration will pass smog in California.

It's about the EXACT wording of the regulations without ANY interpretation. It's the pursuit of happiness, but happiness as the hippies see fit to define it for you.

For example, you even have to provide a REALLY good reason to change out the Catalytic converter if you wanted to do so.

The regulations are about the original design of the exhaust and the emission control system, AND the original locations of those components which means no relocating the catalytic converter and long tube headers I would imagine are also not certified. The hippies do not want you touching ANYTHING...even though it's your car and you have paid your hard earned money to maintain the roads you drive it on.

Smog is bad, but only the smog others create...the emissions from the tailpipes of my '69 are pure fresh air...that smells minty fresh and makes the woodland creatures jump for joy...

I'm not the problem, I'm only one person, how could I be the problem? It's everyone else that should check themselves.
