I think it was in the 1970's that Gail Banks held the Bonneville speed record for a stock bodied car; i.e. factory stock exterior with no added aerodynamics. The car was a 68 C3 hard top convertible. He set the then record at 220 mph. I saw the car and Gail Banks at a car show. The engine was a twin turbocharged 427. Banks said he made his record run with a boost pressure producing 1200 HP. He said he could have upped boost pressure and produced more HP, except he kept HP at the 1200 level for reliability.
OK...notice the speed record specifies "stock body." I doesn't limit what's done underneath the body. Obviously there was the turbo 427. Other mods included....removing the front water radiator and replacing it with an intercooler for the turbo's and a ballast tank of water that weighed 400 pounds. Ballast weight and lowering the nose of the car to perhaps an inch of road clearance was to keep the nose of the car from lifting.
Aero drag increases as the square of speed (I think its a square function). The data point here is that move a C3 stock body at 220 mph requires 1200 hp (if I've got the facts remembered correctly in my old brain). i

Remember that the Texas Mile is a standing start race to 5,280 feet. It is not a flying mile where you are at or near top speed when timing starts. I believe you only have a 1/4 mile to stop so please make sure your brakes work just as good as your mill. Good luck if you decide to do it and take lots of pictures or better yet a cockpit video.

almost ANY car, read worn out econobox can easily attain 100 mph.....they have typically less than 100 hp....even less at the wheels....
all I can attest to is that in MY runs, the first was when the speedo went, I fixed that, but looked and wondered if in fact the tach was correct, then the second run....they both hung in there, and the car was fine....not a issue with lifting or anything other than speed....so I proved the tach was correct and it did correlate corectly on stand with the speedo and the charts....
then there is the electronic pulse verification I did as above to the tach.....so I know 150 WAS really 150.....
all the rest is touchy feely....like saying a car's handling was improved, or the ride quality discussion over shocks, or springs, etc....
MY only comment is the engine was not out of revs, and still pulling strong, car hung in better than I did and plenty of throttle left....probably not 200 mph, not on MY tires anyway, but saying it takes 800 hp to get a shark to 200 mph is just I would believe 400-500 but 800 is way high a estimate....

No way were these cars stock. These were fully race prepped C3 L88 cars that ran at Lemans. They rarely hit 200 and most of the time the drivers said the front end was lifting at 170 or above and the steering was real dicey at that speed. It will take way more than 500 HP to push a stock bodied C3 to 200 mph. I don't care if you have 10 miles. Go look at some Bonneville racers and see what they are pushing for bodies and HP. Again I say the difference between 130 and 200 is ten fold if not more.
Most of those guys running the open road races that are up in the 180 mph range have gobs of HP and body mods to keep it stable.

Suppose I'd throw my 2 cents in the bucket somewhere. I had my 78 up to 140mph with my 3.08 rearend and 406ci engine. This I'm not proud of as it was stupid to do with bfg radial T/A tires rated at 112mph. I did this coming out of a turn going 70mph floored it and in about a 1/4mile stretch or less I was pegging the speedo at 140 and stopped. I also stopped cause it felt like my torque converter was slipping from all the torque pulling the car up the gradual hill.
Like others say it felt like there was some left but who knows. I'm sure it would go a little faster and top speed might take longer than a mile? Dunno and will probably will never try it. I now have 3.55 gears and I don't need to be driving that speed so easily anyways.

Shorty after I got her working properly, I got my 76', totally stock, onto the freeway, and had her revved out at 122mph, or so.
3.08 rear gears, super T10 4 speed, and it just stopped pulling after 4,500rpms. She had nothing left, really.
No aero, body kits, or anything required, on a 30 year old, 102,000 mile, 180hp motor.

C6-Z06 is approaching the 200mph mark.
Compare the C3 C/D to C6Z C/D
Compare the HP
Compare the gearing
I dont think a street C3 will ever come close.
Just my opinion.

I had a 67/427/435 coupe. In 1967 I ran an autocross set up on an old air force base. I buryed the spedo at 160. The rear wheels began to lift of and the car began to fishtail. Probably my most frighting car ride ever. Won the event but never went that fast on the ground again. also I had a 1952 ford with a 110 hp flathead. It would go 120mph easy.

Well Im no expert, my car doesnt even run, yet. But I do watch a lot of Top Gear & according to them 270HP will get you up to 150MPH but to get to the next 100 MPH (up to 257mph) you need 1001HP, 10 radiators & a W16 engian with 4 turbos. Yes i'm talkin about the Veyron episode.

McLaren F1 is still the world's fastest naturally asperated production car at a 243mph with a BMW engine rated at 627bhp

I think the biggest question is are the Head Light up or down? lol
I know as a ten ager my uncle in his 73 clocked me in my Monte doing about 120mph then proceded to walk away from me like I was in park. Now the Monte had a worked 350 maybe 275-300hp (who knows) but he had a Turbo 355 (I think a Garret) with water injection he always called it a 40% turbo (it was the early 80's when he built it) so I figure he was in the 450-500hp range he say he pegged the speedo on a semi regular basis that guy was allways in a hurry down in Miami. So what this means, prolly nothing but the cos allways had trouble trying to catch him.
BTW_ mine doesn't run yet sooooo. I can't say out of personal expirence.

but not with lights up, that's obvious....matter of fact my lights have been non stock for so long I have never done anything speed wise with the old stockers in there....smooth out the tops, but block airflow into the rad??.....
so still a lot closer to 4X the power than 8X the power....
