If your talkin' downspouts you must have a '74 or later car? Here's an idea I did a few years ago that will work on '74 through '82.

You could incorporate a two way solenoid operated valve to divert exhaust gas to either a quiet mufflered twin system to the rear, or when in power mode, dumped directly out the side.... no baffles

That gives you the option for quiet cruising without the scorn of the public or the constabulary.... or if you desire, flip the switch and watch the reaction as you scare the bejeebers out of pedestrians and other motorists as you roar past the local diner!

Or what about a flame thrower... there are lpg gas kits available here in Oz, so I'm sure they're available in the US of A .....
Just like in the Grease movie.... big ***** of flame out the rear for visual effect

Is that different enough?

ya thats differnt enough lol, was thinking flame thrower but i might get in to much trouble with that, but i know there is exhaust cut outs u can get, either mechanical ones or the electric ones, buddy of mine did it to his newer camaro he had was pretty nice....ahoover as for the rear cut outs that nice i was also thinking bout that, but wont it melt my bumper? an where would i get the trim that suposed to go around it, guessing that is so u dont melt ur rear clip?

You would need to use a fiberglass bumper cover so that a bezel mounting area can be molded in to secure the trim or bezel much like the earlier cars. A reproduction stainless bezel can be modified to fit as shown. Heat is not an issue since the pipes don't touch the body.

When I had my custom exhaust installed (nothing fancy, dual aluminized pipes with H pipe through flowmasters) I talked to the muffler shop guy about cutouts and he advised against them. Granted, they may not provide any additional power but sometimes it would be fun just to make a whole lotta noise!

I was wondering if anyone has ever used a round type of muffler and had the exaust come out BEFORE the rear tire. I did this on an old mustang a long time ago and it looked good with the pipes exiting out of the sides without the cost of side pipes. I'm not sure if there is ground clearence to do this with a C3?
