recently had my rear diff cover replaced, old one was cracked.. anywho.. when i drive the vette and shift into a gear quickly i hear and feel this 'thump' from the rear.. i can hear it when i accelerate after coasting also.. i mentioned it to a mechanic i know and he said it might be my u joints or something on the half shafts..
any idea what it coud be/ how much it would be in parts? might do it myself if it isnt too complex, ill probobly put in a fiberglass leaf spring in there while im at it..
if it's just a bad u-joint, you should be able to get out of the project for pretty cheap. even performance u-joints wont run you but 40-50 a piece, and that's on the high side.
yeah im definetly going to take it to the shop first so they can tell me what is really wront with it.. after that ill do it myself, unless he gives me a good price on labor
Could be a lot of things but the ujoints are the usual problem. Replace all 6 if you are going to do the job.
i took the car to the mechanic today, he said that there is a little play in the half shaft u joints.. i know there are 4 out back, but what other two ? im assuming at both ends of the driveshaft right? he said that there is play between the driveshaft and the diff, is that also a u joint? if so is it the same size or do i need another type?
ok so my mechanic is a 'guestimator'.. i finally got my car up and checked the ujoints, they were fine.. zero play... checked the drive shaft, it looked fine...pushed on the diff to see if it had some play.. but it didnt, then i tried to move the front mount bolt,, and turns out i could move it with my fingers..
can i pick this part up at a local auto store? if not ill just order the wilcox one since its a poly unit
A rubber mount provides more 'cushion' when there is reactive torque applied to it than does poly.
correct plus some of the ones being sold are the wrong dimension throwing off the alignement of the DS. Some of the rubber one sold don't have the steel sleeve in them. I use the ones Bairs sells, never a problem with them.

Sounds like you wound up winning on this one. It is much easier to just replace the diff bushing than replacing all 6 u-joints. My guess was going to be check the diff bushing first because it is easiest to check IMO.
Being that your car is a manual it is harder to detect a worn diff bushing. On an automatic car, they usually make a thunk when going from park to drive or to reverse. Good luck with it and let us know if this completes the fix for you.
When ordering a new bushing, get the entire "kit", then you'll have all correct new parts. It's not at all expensive and I've seldom seen a worn one that didn't also have a bolt and washers off of an old baler.
Also a good idea to pull the cross bolts holding the bracket on and make sure they are in good shape and not some short substitute that some hack put in.
