Default Firewall restoration question

I am restoring a 69, the assembly manual call for "plastisol' to be applied to the firewall. First question is how has anyone removed the old plastisol sealer other than scrapping it off and 2) what have people used to to replace the plastisol and/or can it be readily obtained, i.e Eastwood?. I assume that the plastisol is used to prevent water from entering/leaking into the interior. Any insight or leads would be appreciated.

Hi Mike,
The sealer is described in the Technical Information Manual as a "thick black asphalt-like material.
Heat and a scraper gets it off fairly easily.
I used black roofing cement from my local home supply store. I applied it much more carefully than the factory did. Judges like to see it pretty sloppy but I like it neater.
Since my 71 is living a 'dry' life I'm not too concerned about leaks. If you're going to drive more you may want to use it more liberally.
Here's a before and after of the wiper well on my 71.
Happy Nw Year
Regards,
Alan

Alan, did you apply a topcoat, to the roofing cement. If so which brand and finish of paint, is that the same paint that is used around the windshield frame.

Thanks Bob

Wow Alan, that looks beautiful.
As you know, I'm currently restoring the interior of a 76 and also in our wiper compartment there is a black asfalt like material to be seen, and I too, don't like the look of it :-)
I hope one day, I can make it as nice as you did.

Sorry to get of topic here ...

Cheers,
Maarten

Hi Everyone,
After the roofing cement I top coated (The factory called it 'blackout') everything with Krylon, semi-flat, #1613. I like the look of the Krylon, you can vary the shine by spraying it wet or dry, and it's easy to touch up if you need to.
That's the black you see in the 'after' picture. You can see it's a little glossier on the windshield frame than in the wiper well. It's the same paint.
Happy New Year!
Regards,
Alan
