I had a choice, buy a 502 short block or go piece meal...I went piece meal...

advantages to me:

bought an eagle internal weight, 4.25" crank...gained 29 cubes and saved $$$ on the price of external balancer and flywheel....used my exiting gear

Bought JE 10.5 pistons.....gained compression

Bought Trick Flow H beam rods w/ARP bolts.....lighter than factory rods

Bought solid roller cam...higher lift, longer duration...more zooooom zoooooom......

Had machine shop finish hone the block, balance the rotating assembly

When all was done, it cost me just a shade over 500.00 more to go peace meal than buy a short block...

We have been using the Callies Compstar cranks in out 383 builds as they are second to none as far as sizing, staightness, indexing and for around 600 dollars.

Rods we either use the Callies Compstar 6 inch rods are about 525.00 a set or the Scat I beams with the 7/16 bolts are about 315.00 a set.

Pistons we have been using the Maule pistons and ring kits and they are about 525.00 for the kit.

Balancing is 175.00 and on the rods we size them on both ends and check the pin bores in the pistons for proper clearance.

On the cheaper cast cranks we have seen the indxing off but there only a 200 dollar crank what do you want!!

The Callies Compstar cranks are forged as Callies don't sell cast cranks and at our shop we don't use cast cranks in our builds

Thats what we sell them for as I think there was a small increase since the begining of the year.

Hell I can buy 4340 cranks for 375 dollars but the qaulity is just not there as far as sizing, straightness and indexing. I spend the extra money and do right he first time.
