Default 76 will not start.

76, 350 would not start and found the fusible link, orange wire, was bad. Just replaced link and have cond.
Car still will not crank; checked voltage at battery and at pos. term. on starter no voltage drop;
suggestions on where to go from here, bad starter?
thanks

The wire that makes it crank is the 12 purple at the starter solenoid.Make sure when you turn the key to start you have power on the purple wire.

Have you tried running a jumper from the "S" pole on the solenoid to a known hot wire a to see if the engine will turn over? This is the simplest test. Harbor Freight sell a remote starter with a button for around 6 or 7 bucks. Or you can always do what shade tree mechanics do (don't ask me how I know) and use a screwdriver to jump from the "S" terminal to the battery cable on the starter. It can be a bear to get to, but it will tell you if it's a wiring problem eliminating the switch, battery, etc. Make sure your key is in the off position so the motor won't fire up and scate the crap out of you. Hehehehe!!!!

Thanks.
I found the problem. The fuse link (orange) was shorted. The 3 wires to the solanoid in heat shield were covered in oil.

Well, replaced the bad fuse link. Still no start. Is this "S" terminal the connector with the purple (?) wire?
Thanks

Repaired fuse link, still no crank.
No voltage at "S" term. with key in start or on position.
Jumped accross batt to S term and could get the starter to turn over. I'm kind of assuming bad starter switch? looks like a pain to replace since it involves taking the majority of the steering column apart. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Could also be the neutral safety switch or the clutch switch. Both of them are in between the ignition switch and the starter.

This would be where I would start also. If the neutral safety isn’t made you will get no power down at the starter on the purple wire. That = no startey

After re-reading the original post, I have to wonder what made the orange link go bad. You could have had a short at the clutch or neutral safety switch causing an additional dilemma.

Thanks. I should have mentioned AT. But, I didn't think of the N. safety switch. I'll check that.

I think the Neu. safety switch is bad. Am i doing this correct? With key in on position; power into switch on pink wire, no power at purple wire or purple/wht. wire; with key in start position; no power to purple/wht; power to purple.
How do I by pass switch to switch?
Thanks

A short length of wire with solderless connectors should do it.

I am not that familiar with the neutral switch on a Vette but, maybe somebody could help out with info on checking proper position for it?

The neutral safety switch is a pretty simple switch. In park it makes a connection between the two purple wires. ( Same thing for the reverse lights) To jumper the switch just run a jumper wire between the two purple wires at the plug for the neutral safety switch.

It sounds like you have found your problem. It should start when you jumper it, if it does try adjusting the switch. If adjusting it doesn’t work you can take it apart pretty easily and normally fix what is wrong with it.

Thanks to all who responded. I started to take the switch apart and bumped the park level into park.
