Default Exhaust Questions?

I am going ahead and go with my duals and am designing them now, but I have a few questions
1. I want to use 3" pipe, any reasons not to?

2. Should I put on a balance tube and if so where should it be placed. right now I am thinking of behind the crossmember.

3. I have not found any cats with a 3" opening (granted I havent look other than summit), so I am going to have to reduce to that size. Once I reduce the pipe size does it make any difference to go back to 3" after that?

4. I know that this is personal preference but should I go ahead and route the pipe to the back of the vette or exit just in front of the rear tires?

5. I will be installing an O2 sensor for carb adjustment. Should I go ahead and install two and where is the correct placement of the sensor?

Getting close :yesnod:

I didnt notice what kind of engine you have. 3" is pretty big I dont have any experience to say if its too big or not - although unless you have a really healthy engine (small or big block) I would guess that the investment really wouldnt pay off any more than a 2 1/2" system.

Dynomax makes a 3" in / out convertor - check jegs I think it appears in the thier catalog. look for p/n 289-15147 ($139.99 two way) or 289-15143 ($129.99 3 way w/ air tube)

Summit has the 15143 part under wlk-15143 (wlk for Walker, the parent co of dynomax) for 4 cents less than Jegs. While WLK-15147 goes for 139.50

You need serious HP before stepping up to 3" pipe. You will kill your torque otherwise.

2. Should I put on a balance tube and if so where should it be placed. right now I am thinking of behind the crossmember.
X-pipe is preferable. You will probably only be able to run it right behind the crossmember.

3. I have not found any cats with a 3" opening (granted I havent look other than summit), so I am going to have to reduce to that size. Once I reduce the pipe size does it make any difference to go back to 3" after that?
http://www.dynomax.com but you won't need 3" if you run dual pipes.

4. I know that this is personal preference but should I go ahead and route the pipe to the back of the vette or exit just in front of the rear tires?
There are very real benefits to running clear pipe to mufflers at the back of the car... has to do with how exhaust cools, bla, bla, bla. This doesn't really come into play since you will be using cats, but keep it in mind.

5. I will be installing an O2 sensor for carb adjustment. Should I go ahead and install two and where is the correct placement of the sensor?
If you are going with after market headers there should be a prevision for the O2 sensor.

OK, since you asked:

4. I know that this is personal preference but should I go ahead and route the pipe to the back of the vette or exit just in front of the rear tires?

How about coming out in front of the rear tires, but put side pipe covers on (the pipes come out where the side pipes normally would)? Would that be tacky?

fauxrs already gave you a source of 3" CC. Mine is a 3" in, dual 2-1/2" out, but I don't know the brand off hand (came from the muffler shop).

3" makes it through the frame but it is a TIGHT fit. You're really going to have to have the system clamped tight to keep it from rattling in there.

BTW, I'm 3" exhaust because I went single pipe.

Good Luck, pics will be appreciated.

Does anybody sell a 3" dual system for the C3, or is this custom territory?

1 Flow is better than turbulance, go w/ 2 1/2 at most.
2 Yes.
4 Rear if you want to pass. (& don't put a sign on it either that says something like this car will never pass  ) J/K !

I guess I shoud have gave specs on the motor.
350 +30
11.5 KB pistons
6.250 Rods
Crane cam .480
Weiland Dual Plane
Holley 750
Mild heads

The reason that I chose 3" is the collector is 3" and current has mufflers welded to the collectors. I will have to cut them off and I was just going to fab a piece of pipe to match up to them. If I will lose torque then I maybe I should go down to 2.5''. Is there a tried and tested rule or can you only determine this by expirmentation?

The headers that I have do not have any O2 sensor prevision, so I will need to install it myself.

Thanks for the information

I'll answer this post after I get to work. I started writing but ran out of time.... there is a lot involved with exhaust scavenging.
