Will the vette run ok if I remove the headlight vacuum canister.(I know the headlights wont go up)
Mine has dents in it, so I want to remove it to check and repair it (or replace it). Just want to know if I can drive the vette if needed or am I going to have massive vacuum leaks?

What year is your car? Mine was massive and huge. I removed it to save about 50 lbs. I think the 80 and later C3s had a much smaller tank. I got a vacuum "t" and hooked up the vacuum lines directly to the headlights. It takes a bit longer for them to come up, but they work just fine. You also have to wait till both are down before you cut off the engine.

But make sure your 3 port check valve is good.I have a number for an alternative check valve that takes the place of the white filter but still uses the 3 port valve as only a T in the future if you would like it.

When you get the can out please hold the can up to the light and see if it says Maxwell House or Folgers under the flat black paint and if it does try to take a pic of it. I had one of the old cans that said Folgers but somehow it disappeared. Thanks
Hi DW,
I understand that the current replacement canisters don't work quite as well as the originals because the cans are now 13 ounces and the original cans held 16 ounces. So the price of Colombian Supreme, and French Roast, has affected how our cars vacuum systems operate.

Alan
OK I am probably wrong here but isn't the vacuum tank the large square unit - you know the one with all the vacuum hoses hooked up to it that stores the vacuum?
I thought the coffee can was for the emmision system. I have a 70 and 72 so it may be different on yours?

I see in the write up "While never used on 1968-1979 cars," was this from a C2? Don't mean to hijack the thread just trying to learn.
I am going to post later on how to check the other coffee can looking piece that I do believe is part of the emmisions and has not been hooked up on my car for over 20 years.

Yes just about anything will replace the tank that will hold vacuum. The early tanks were under the drivers fender, next was the front tube frame member and then the coffee can.The above can at Wilcoxs is the later one for the 80-82 I believe. The C2 didnt have a vac can.
