Default i need some help

hello
iam new to this forum but i figured it was the best way to find out about what i am wanting to do
i have a 71 that is completely stock numbers matching
i would like to keep it stock looking under the hood but would like to get more power out of it.
what i want to do is put a set of 327 /300 hp heads and cam in it and also a stock aluminum intake .
can this be done or am i wasteing my time and should just leave it alone?
basicly i want more power but i dont want to loose the stock look .
thanks

327 heads will cause more headaches than they are worth. The bolt holes and hook ups are all different from 70s models. Stay with a head the will directly interchange.

Whats your budget. Aluminum aftermarket heads with a cam and aluminum intake can yield 300 hp easily.

aluminum heads ( afr, dart, edlbrock...), cam upgrade, depends on how much torque you want. mine is pushing 380 ft/lbs (350/350 L46 stock ). i am in the same boat, "original looking" but more torque. what engine do you have?

i have had this car for almost 3 yrs now its bone stock .
i dont run pump gas in it i run 100 octane leaded gas from the airport in it it dosnt like pump gas at all.
in 71 gas had lead so i guess it just likes it better never had any problems with it it runs ALOT better with avaition fuel.
i drive it on the weekends and just want to get a bit more out of it sure when you step on it it gets right up and go's and chirps the tires in 2nd grear im just wanting to upgrade the engine with stock parts from a higher hp moter

I can sympathize with you because I was looking to do a similar thing when I rebuilt my motor 4 years ago. I ended up taking my heads (993, which are large chamber heads, but flow well) and having larger valves (2.02/1.6) put in them along with some pop up pistons to increase compression. That along with a good high lift cam (the XE-268) and some headers and 2.5" exhaust all the way back definitely woke it up. Add a Lars tune, and it runs pretty damn good.

Can you go dual exhaust & no cats? 30+ HP.
Going to a 5-speed or overdrive auto will help with acceleration also.

Before you do any upgrades to the top side you need to consider the miles on the bottom of the motor. Too much power added to the top side could cause a failure if the lower side is not in good condition.

That said , if you want to keep the cast iron intake then having the heads re worked can find some power. A new cam can help also.

This is just a guess , but these 2 things may find 50 to 60 hp??

Almost have to, to get any gains in hp and tq. You can always run an aftermarket iron head like world products SR or any alum head, then paint Chevy orange to conceal, same for intake. It costs too much to upgrade old iron heads with new valves, springs, port work, etc. Cheaper to replace. As others have said, need to come up with a budget and work from that OR have a long term plan and break it down into stages and implement when the funds are avail.
Do a search, this has been discussed many times here!
best of luck

I have the same engine and it runs just fine on no-lead, low octane fuel. It was designed with 8.5:1 compression just for that purpose. Your engine/carb/dist settings need to be revised and/or you may have other mechanical or vacuum [leak] related problems. I have also wrestled with the issue of staying "stock" or modifying the engine for better performance. You could change pistons to flat-top design and pick up about 1/2 point of compression...and a few more ponies....and no one would be the wiser. Anything else you do to boost horsepower would either be: 1) an obvious change in external hardware; or 2) an inefficient mix of stock 'external' hardware and aftermarket 'internal' hardware. For me, my "power" days are over and I'm happy with a well-tuned and well running stock engine. Good luck on your decision.
