Default A/C experts, please chime in.

Part of my restoration in my '71 is to update the A/C to a more modern system, so I got a new Sanden 508 compressor and a parallel flow condenser, the rest is all stock (except the upgraded POA valve). A friend told me that it would be better to install a VIR eliminator to the system since I have a new compressor that should work fine with a CCOT (cycling clutch orifice tube) system. I really liked that idea, but I dont know if my stock evaporator will accept the fittings of that kit, do you think its worth trying?? .. I'll be happy to spend $150 if I will have a better A/C.

On my 73, I used the Sanden. I did away with the VIR system by changing the evaporater and dryer to a 79 model. every thing bolted
up. I have been running it for 3 years in S. Florida, 50,000 miles with no
problems, it works great.

That's the best way to do it.

While on my '72 with the expansion/POA valve he already has, same setup, I have the import compressor off a '88 serp setup, and running with the stock components and 134...works fine, and I don't have that irritating on/off crap from the compressor all the time clicking in and out....just seems better to me....

I've been doing some research.

This is with regard to converting a '73 a/c car to modern a/c:

you need a #4709 Sanden Compressor ($200)
compressor brackets from alangrovecomponents.com ($90)
a '79 evaporator ($250-300) - bolts right in
orifice tube for the evaporator ($2.00)
use factory condenser
Custom Hoses from an a/c shop ($?) - haven't done that yet
Uses no "expansion valve"

comments?

I could be mistaken but if he switches to the Sanden compressor and does away with the POA valve I don't think he would have the drag on the system that the A6 system does that makes that anoying on/off.

Maybe 73383 could clarify. ?????????

If I recall correctly - the A6 compressor takes 17 Horsepower, the Sanden takes 3. Probably won't notice the Sanden running...

Thats why I'm so interested in a CCOT system, because the Sanden compressor will not drag the engine while on/off cycles.

If no one else chimes in you could also pm forum member Brandywine. He has an 82 which is a little different to start with but I believe he converted his system using the Sanden unit.

I did the same conversion on my '73 as mentioned above. I paid less for all the parts except the AlanGrove brackets. Compressor off Ebay and evaporator from Arizona A/C ordered on line. Mine still does not cool as well as I would like. Did you guys stay R12 or go R134 as I did. Also had my hoses made and system charged at a local shop, cost close to $400 for that.
When I look back at what I spent and compare to a Vintage Air setup I wonder if I would not have better off with that.
Also if you have POA I don't think you have the VIR setup.
