Let me preface my $.02 worth here by saying I am no exhaust expert, but here goes. I don't think that "equalizing the pressure" is the point. The "H" pipe is to increase scavenging efficiency. To do this, it must be placed at the correct point, not just where ever. I have heard 18" past the header collectors, and I have heard something about putting a line of wax crayon down the pipe and putting the "H" pipe where the wax melts first. I don't know, but when I had true duals put on my '81, I asked about an "H" pipe and the guy said there was no good place to put it. He may have just not wanted to mess with it, but either way, my duals had a MAJOR performance impact, and I kind of like the "stereo" effect when you stand behind the car with no "H" pipe.
A crossover pipe is certainly not a necessity. Back in the days before catalytic converters, when cars had full duals from the factory, there was no crossover pipe.
