Picked up the plug at autozone. I dont know what to think now.

Here is a pick of some plugs that were suggested.

On the left is the RS12YC (plug suggested by sheet that came with engine)
Middle-RJ12YC (called yr one and the lady told me this, I called back and got another person and he didnt know where she got that info, but he said he didnt have any tech info on the engine...???)
Right-3344 (Vortec engine is supposedly the same as late 90's camaro engine, this is the plug used for that)
What looks like the right one? I'm pretty lost right now

I know guys on here have the same engine, what plugs are you guys running?
I know year one doesnt make the engine but who does? I figure the best way to get this info is directly to the source, but the guy at year one said it was year one engines.

I would see what cylinder head is on this engine to make sure that the correct plug is used. Citing the comment about 'RJ' and not 'RS'. These are two completely different applications, one is early and the other is a late model head with a tapered seat. You would be better off using AC plugs anyway.....

Well since the vendor does not know what they sell?? Very strange. You have displayed both tapered and non-tapered plugs. Short reach, long reach. Both 14 and 18mm. So it's a crap game from this end. Virtually impossible to advise you from afar. Find out what heads you have.

Until you find out which plug is the right one, you could take a 90* pick tool and stick it into the hole, bring it back up to touch thte bottom of the threads. Just to find out how deep the threads are. That might give you some idea anyway, long, short, etc.

I have a set of Matco pick tools with bright orange handles to hold it well.

Let us know,
Tank

Does this engine have aluminum heads? Sometimes you get a little flaking(not good) if they're not totally clean and blown out with air before assembly. Well when you get the right plugs...I know its hard to change plugs when the engines hot but try this...warm it up with the old plugs and then change to the new ones, try not to let it idle much at all upon starting and take it out for a 1/2 mile run at half to full throttle and immediately shut it down and check the plugs, this will give you a true reading on them with a load on the engine, instead of all that idle time and extra fuel needed at start up and previous flooding/fuel probs. Good Luck.

Just to narrow the choices down, pull out a plug and with a light and mirror determine if you have tapered (T) or flat plug seats.

I looked up some other threads about the same engine and for sure they are aluminum vortec heads and one person said a longer reach plug is needed.

Im at work right now, but I can take a look at the plug hole tonight.

Thanks,
Sean

Hey guys,

Just went out to check out the plug hole. I used a set of pick tools and counted the threads with it. I counted 11 so that would mean the longer reach plug. I couldnt find a mirror but I felt it and it seems to be a flat seat and not tapered. So I think I am using the right plug and the girl from yearone had no idea what she was saying. Would there not be an obvious problem if I needed tapered and used a flat or can they be interchanged up to a point?

Assuming my plugs are right, is there any problem besides a little if any detonation that could be seen on the old plugs? I assume I might of had the timing a little high for the 91-92 octane gas(highest I can find around here). I am using an octane booster,I know it doesnt really raise the octane but I have read that it can help with detonation.

Thanks for all the help,
Sean

doesn't Derebery or Hi Tech make these motors for year one. Check their web sites , they have the same motors for sale. I just saw A rep from year one on one of the hot rod TV shows the other day showing this motor and it had a HI Tech sign on it. You should be able to call them.

well since this thread is getting more response than mine i will post in here. my thread is here http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-t...post1568653322

This motor is from yearone. The heads are vortec heads but are not aluminum. They are a factory head that has been ported with 2.02, 1.60 valves. The intake is a professional products crosswind its just like the RPM Air Gap. Im need some plugs for mine too. Im currently running AC DELCO R42LTS plugs. My holley ran too rich and fouled my plugs. So im in the market for plugs. Yes Hi Tec and Derebery make the motors. The spec sheet states that the Champion RS12YC is the plug. These plugs have to be a .708 reach for the vortec heads. I have found this site for cross refence for the AC Delco and Champion plugs. http://www.sparkplugs.com/results_cr...CrossWarning=1
these motors that they sell are supposedly the 96 vortec truck motors.

The plugs you pulled out are tapered plug and you say the seats are flat. I wouldn't put any plug in there until you find out 100% the part number for the exact headd you have and the recommended plug for that head

Hey Silver,

Were the plugs that you were running flat or tapered?

Ill try and give one of those suppliers a call tomorrow and ask them for sure.

From that list that Silver posted what plugs would you guys recommend. Are their ones that are better or is a preference type thing?

Thanks,
Sean
