Default Destroyed a fuel pump today

I attempted to install a new AC Delco stock fuel pump in my '74 today with the 454 motor. I cracked and destroyed one side of it. Must of binded up with the rod.

Any good advice for round two?

I did use assembly lube on the rod to keep it up there........

I was upset but calmed down quickly.....!!

Thanks.

Bob

does it have a bolt in the front of the block that you can take out and put a longer one in to hold up the rod?

Rotate the engine so the push rod is on it's "in" stroke. That will minimize the pressure put on the pump's arm while you install it.

I don't know if the bolt trick works with a Big Block, but what works for me is bearing grease on the pushrod. Turn the motor by hand to make sure the push rod is all the way up (on the base circle), then tighten both bolts evenly until tightened. You may not find this method in a manual, but it works for me.
On a Big Block Vette, it also helps to have hands the size of a 3 year old child.

BB and SB are the same process. Pull that bolt from the front of the block, hand rotate the motor until the pusrod is in as far as possible and then thread a longer bolt in to hold it in place. Snug the pump up and keep going back and forth from left bolt to right bolt to keep the pump straight. Once its tight, replace the long bolt with the short one and put some sealer on the threads.
