Default 1977 Power Windows Help Needed!!!

Hey there.. I have read all the Chiltons and Haynes Manuals, but have exhausted all hopes except for an expert on here.

My 77's driver's side window will not work. I took the motor/regulator out, hooked it to a battery, and nothing. BUT... If I have the thing hooked to a battery and kind of "short" the motor housing across the door frame, it comes to life. That leads me to believe that it's not being grounded.

SHouldn't it ground when it's bolted securely to the door? I need help here guys (and gals). This is befuddling me something terrible.

Thanks in advance, 77fixer..

When you have the motor out of the door you have to ground it and apply 12 volts for it to work. In the door, it is grounded by its bolted connection. It still need 12 volts to work. I had a bad wire on my 77. The window would not go up, but it worked going down. Use a grounded test light on the two connections in the plug in the door.

Does the passenger side window work?

Both motors get power through the relay. If your passenger side works then you have a wiring problem or switch problem on the drivers side. You can check switch by substituting with the other switch.

Most common failure of wiring is a break at the door grommet area.

What I've done is reinstalled the motor/regulator and am hooking jumper cables to it directly bypassing the switch/interior wiring.

For some reason, it isn't grounding. Is there some other way to ground the motor?

I hope this don't sound dumb but you do know that the two wires on your motor one terminal runs the window up and the other terminal runs the motor down I am assuming by saying you hooked up jumpers that the negative/ground goes to the door or the motor and the other jumper goes to either one of the two motor motors.

Yep, I grounded the negative jumber cable to the body and then touched the positive to the actual wire.

I wouldn't have knon if not for reading these forums though.

Run a temp. seperate ground from a know good ground to the motor. Check both up & down operation. This will tell you if it is indeed a ground problem.
You could check your ground by using a trouble light. Ground on window motor, pos. to batt.
