Default WEIRD rattle & knocking

Ok - so I will try to explain what I have going on now .... bear with me

At idle, I hear something between a knock and a rattle from Oil pan, torque converter area ..... I have been underneath, grabbed, pulled and tugged on everything to make sure there isn't something loose that is banging on motor - which I am fairly certain there is not.

My oil pressure is up, and sound GOES AWAY when I give it a little juice (off idle) ......

I am wondering (and it is totally possible) that during my motor rebuild, that I dropped a bolt, nut or washer down there and it ended up in pan??? Wishful thinking but I did lose a piece of hardware or two during it that I never did find, and that is all I can think of.

I thought that maybe a rod or something with oil pickup but since pressure is up and fine, I am thinking those are ok too......

Any ideas from you SMARTER-THAN-I guys?

I had a starter drive me nuts once. The sound was a tapping, but very intermittent at idle. Turns out the starter bendex was tapping the flexplate once in a while. I replaced the starter and the noise was gone.

See if your fuel line is ratteling against the frame under the hood.

That is what I found and I cut a smapp piece of rubber fuel line and slid it under a portion and the noise went away

Could be a cracked flex plate (hidden by torque converter)

exhausts have a habit of shaking around and contacting something at idle too.

The one thing you can be sure of....it's NOT a washer, etc. in the oil pan. Anything laying on the bottom of the pan...in oil...will not vibrate significantly. The oil would act as a dampener to any motion of that item.

Some great ideas ...... here is my idea on how to proceed, so that you guys can tell me if I am thinking clearly! I am going on assumption that nothing was left in engine that didn't belong there, exhaust is tightly installed (held onto it along it everywhere to check) AND I am reasonably sure that the fuel lines are not culprits, as I actually held onto them at different points to check that too.

Remove flex plate bolts (check them for tightness while doing that) and pull torque converter back, tie it back somehow so that it cannot move forward, then start up motor and check for noise.

a) Check around the flex plate for CRACKS and or missing teeth.
b) If none, how would I check for intermittent noisy starter like MoneyPit suggested?

With the inspection cover off watch the nose of the starter. If the gear bounces, you'll see it.

Alright - will check that this morning ..... if starter is culprit, the starter gear will bounce onto flexplate teeth while motor is running (and banging is happening)??

What is banging if the flexplate is cracked or loose bolts???

that would be the flexplate rattling on the end of the crank if it not contacting the TC.

The very first thing you need for finding ANY kind of noise under the hood, is a stethoscope, go to you parts house and find one, NAPA, AZ, anyone....should be a stock item.....two functions, the first is to take the probe tip and stick it on the engine, intake for really solid, then valve covers...and listen for a similar sound....

then accessory drives and the accessories themselves....alt/pumps/a-c etc.....

then if no luck take the probe off the end of the plastic tube, maybe buy a longer tube to replace the short one it typically comes with.....and take the end of it around anyplace you think to look/listen for the sound, that will definately localize it......

Primary trouble shooting tool for odd sounds anywhere in a car.....

Good to see you back in action Danny! I checked the flexplate bolts and damn if two were not loose!!!! I am going to take them all out, put some threadlock on and maybe a lockwasher ...... I have not been able to get it to knock since I tightened them up.

Pull the torque converter cover from the bottom of the transmission bellhousing area. There are only 4 1/4 inch bolts (7/16 heads) which hold the cover on. You may find the culprit here.

Gene - good to talk to you too! I was actually down in JAX (had to drive my son down to his new base NAS JAX) for duty. Would have stopped in if I known where exactly you were! I don't realize how many people I don't have the opportunity to chat with when I don't come on CF for a while!!!!

You guys all rock!

P.S - I am trying to get back to work now that my smallest one is 7yo, so I can marry my dreamgirl, so any help in finding a real job now would be awesome! Thought I would ask since you guys seem to help me with everything else

When we lived west of Phoenix (near Luke AFB) we called it "the sound of FREEDOM". Some folks hated the 'noise'....we loved hearing them!
