I've been messing around with the shifter the last few days but when it's fully put into reverse it dosen't come out all the way. You have to go underneath the car and pull the linkage by hand to get it out. I've been messing around with the shift linkage but can't figure it out. I was thinking about buying a new shifter assembly. Do you guys have any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.
Hi Erik,
Do you have the GM CHASSIS SERVICE MANUAL? It has complete directions for adjusting the shift linkage in section 7-15. There's a little tool that you need to have, it's used to align the shifter, but the directions are there to make it yourself. I used a 1" plastic paint scraper.
Actually the adjustment is pretty easy.
Regards,
Alan
yeah, i just checked the manual and figured that part out. Now when reverse on the transmission is disengaged it won't shift into 1st or 2nd. When the transmission is engaged in reverse it will shift into 1st and 2nd. It will always shift into 3rd and 4th though. So I need to figure out whats up with the gear box.
I made the key like Alan said. It was so easy that I was able to do it. If you take the linkage out just for reverse, you can try adjusting it at different intervals to see when it works. I had numerous problems like that with my Muncie, now I have a T-5. It's been flawless since day one. <Shameless plug>
nevermind. I figured it out. The reverse handle was upsidedown. I was following the diagram and it wasn't the same as my transmission. Everythings working now.
Haha, it happens -- glad to hear it's fixed. There were two separate periods of time where I had to park up hills. I'll leave the rest to your imagination.
