Default Wimpy azz Horn

Ok guys, now I am getting down to some serious business after motor rebuild, diff upgrade and 200r4 tranny rebuild/transplant

My horn sounds like it is going through PUBERTY Not very loud and quite frankly if I would yell loudly out the window I would probably get more attention!

Years ago when I got the car, I remember that I dug some dirt out of horn ...... maybe not all of it, or at least not enough of it ....

OR should I just look at replacing stock horn with SOMETHING MANLY

Anybody been through this exercise already that can shed some light as to the what and hows ?

JUNKYARD is your friend.....I have TWO lo notes, and one high note on my '72... if you look at the horns you will see a small screw in there to adjust the tone, contacts, slightly.....you can vary the tone with it....so I tuned one higher than the other on the lo note twins....it's fairly loud....

course here in Florida, land of 30mph speed limited Buicks, it's considered VERY bad form to honk your horn....these slo boes really get irate.....

up north, it's a everday occurance, and everyone ignores the noise.....YMMV....

Gene - you talking about screws on the stock horn? It is 20* right now or I would be on my back in the garage looking for the screw!!!!

So if my horn is jacked and cannot be adjusted, are there certain cars/trucks at the junkyard I should check out to get a proper fit or are they pretty much universal fit?

Yeh, well the SAY it's supposed to be 70f here daytime over the weekend, and yes most any GM horn of the eras will work, they allmost all look alike, damn similar.....one wire, mounting bolt ground....yes you can tweek the bolt a bit sometimes to get that rascle to respond, but for the most part it's only a sick sheep bleep......some horns fair better than others....less water/etc.....pick up about 3-4 of them, and give them a shot....

Those are pretty good units. I put a high/low pair on a Tundra I used to own. Plenty loud like an old Caddy.

So to make sure I understand correctly: the vette has only 1 unit now??

And you guys have replaced them with two or three, in the stock location, with no fitment issues???

If that is all true, I will just do that!

your car should have two under the front of the bumper? and if there is still an alarm for your year in the driverside fenderwell, close to the fire wall, behind the cruise actuator thingy, above the front wheel, behind the emblem.....

MY '72 vert was a old show car, but totally stock far as I know under hood.....harness and all looked OEM.....and it had a high note bolted to the fender header just forward of the hood, and that support piece going from the boomerang unboltable front thwart just under the rad support....to the front bumper in center there....that had the other horn on it....there was a similar hole on the pass side, so I added the 3rd horn and a wire/connector....

I THINK every GM car of the era had a high/lo note combo horn setup.....

dunno why the vettes would be any different.....

I know the horn on my 84 potiac bonneville I used to have was plenty loud. I looked just like any other GM horn, so something like that might be a possibility.

Default old horns

I chose old caddie horns. they seemed like they had a louder tone, but not as harsh as some. not sure of year, but mid 80's. get both hi & low, because they are tuned.

Those FIAMM horns, say that you need a "RELAY" for TWO horns (one HIGH and one LOW freq) .... is that already on our stock car???, or is that something that needs added if you use their horn???

Or maybe I will just hit the junkyard this weekend and knock it out that way.

My '72 only has one horn unless you count the alarm.

I think the Caddies had four horns, each with a different note. If you can find a mid-nineties Fleetwood or Roadmaster you will find two horns in each front corner and they all produce a different note (I think?). I think they actually have the note stamped into them. Wire them through a relay setup and you'll have a real honker!

OK, so today it is a WARM 40* so I got my butt out into garage and crawled under .... so STOCK on a 1980: There are two horns up front, one below the headlight vacuum can and one above it, slightly to the LH side. Then there is one additional horn for the alarm system that is back around the cruise & charcoal canister.

The one ABOVE the canister (slightly to LH side) is the HIGH PITCH FREQ, and it works ..... the one below canister is (I think) the LOW PITCH FREQ, and it does NOT WORK

Well, a beautiful 55* now and back to work on the vette ..... so no wonder I didn't have a well sounding horn ..... only one of them is working!

Would anyone try to open it up and fix this one or just too much hassle, and easier to get a junkyard replacement????

According to my vette's manual, it is the LOW freq that is working (first inline and highest off the ground), and the BROKEN HIGH FREQ horn (last inline and lowest to ground).

Should the horn work if I applied 12v from a battery or battery charger? I thought so, and even tried it from the top wire that I know is getting juice.

inspect the non working horn and look for a crack, my 78 is the same set up as yours and i found that the hi note horn was cracked and full of dirt..

on your fiamm question i used the existing wiring and factory relay and plugged them in and bolted them to the factory location.
these are the horns i picked up only mine were new in the package
