I have a problem with my 80. The window motor on the drivers side quit.
To make a long story short, I have an intermittent (sp) power problem.
I have power to the motor sometimes and sometimes not.
I also noticed the problem on the right side.
After checking the motor, and using a test light, I know it is not the motor. Isn't there a relay or something on this car under the brake console?
Before I go buying switches, maybe the relay is going bad.
Any suggestions???
On 76 the PW relay is behind the center gauge cluster behind the radio. You may want to use an ohm meter to check switch's and wires. My 76 has a 3 prong switch. Center is power in (I think). I put 1 lead in center then other lead went in top prong and activated switch then reversed other lead and checked down.
You seem to be on the right track with the relay since you have problems with both windows. When you get to the relay you should be able to check the wiring up to the relay as well. I believe the relay grounds to the frame by the housing, you may just have a poor gound.
I was looking in a vendors catalog and it listed one.
Maybe I will call them and see what they are talking about.
I cant believe Im the only one that has run into this problem, but thats how it goes sometimes.
Thanks for the post!
I had issues with both windows on my '82 and new switches cured the problems. Also cleaned all the contacts on the motors and connectors. Do the auto door lock contacts while you're in there too - fixed mine.
The 80 has no relay for the windows, 2 switches, 2 motors and a wire harness. Look for rhe door ground wire (black) conected to the inside door handle, it goes thru the door hinge area and connects to the bird cage frame probably thru a connector. It is actually undersized for the job and at near 30 years old the contacts are likely bad. Same thing for the connector on the window motor and on the switch contacts. A lot of the time flakey windows is the switch, they get full of junk and get intermittent. Sometimes part of the problem is the window rollers and tracks are full of hard antique grease too.
here is a schematic

Thanks,
I really appreciate your time in doing this for me.
I have the motor out and am cleaning all of the old grease out of the gear set up.
Also, I am replacing both of the switches.
Again, thanks for the diagram too!
