Default Overheating with a twist

Lets see what you guys think….I just helped a buddy do an initial fire up after we installed an Edelbrock top end kit. The motor fired right up, but the temp gauge in the car says it’s overheating to around 240. (we shut the car down at that point) The thermostat in the car is a 160 and the fans are set to come on at 185 and off at 170.

Here’s the kicker when the gauge in the car reads 210 the fans kick on. I checked the temperature of the surface of the block with an IR gun and it reads 175 when the fans kick on. He bought a new sending unit when he was doing the assembly so no back history on the sending unit. I am thinking the new sending unit is reading a different resistance than it should. He has a 1976 Vette and the sending unit the parts store sold him looks like the one in my 69. A bit different than the one he took out. One other note; the old unit was in the head and we have relocated it to the manifold to make room for the fan switch. I don’t know if that makes a difference, but thought I would mention it. Any help you can offer is appreciated.

I would agree the the suspect is the new sending unit...I did a sending unit replacement last summer & found the same problem...the resistance is a bit different thus giving you a different reading I went back to the old unit & guess what Perfect! In my case the fails safe thermostat was the problem.

Agree, sending unit is the wrong one.
Your buddy happy with the Edelbrock top end kit by the way?
