"82" Differential ???
Does anyone know if there is a way to check the clutch pack in the differential before tearing it down ???

80-82s have weak differentials.
Differential Crosspin is soft and will wear on you. Replacements are becoming real difficult to find I understand.
Side yokes are soft and will wear on you, causing them to mushroom and make removal a job that may require grinding the inner ends to relieve the mushrooms.
Front pinion seal is known to leak
Side yoke seals are known to leak
Posi dog ears are known to give way and 27 yr old clutches are usually worn.
Best thing to do is a complete overhaul from a reputable rebuilder than has access to some of the OEM NOS Dana parts that are fast becoming scarce.
This is one area to do it right and forget about shortcuts, IMHO.

I just had my diff. rebuilt by V-tech in Stillman valley Il. they are very reasonable.
