Does that heavy piece do something structurally for the front end? I pulled one off my car when switching from a 73 clip back to the original 72 clip. It was very heavy....I didn't weigh it, but I'll bet it was 50# or more. I can't remember if it did anything structurally to hold up the front end.
GK, that is what holds the fronts down at high speeds....better leave it....
but seriously, those headlight assy's weigh a ton, and removing them is a goodly additon for most any performance increase on the sharks....doing so is anyone's concept as to final outcome....
25lbs, ... maybe.. trust me I just went outside and picked it up to make sure
problem is if you take it out im pretty sure you will have to fab up your own bumper support.. the peice in the center that is attached to the vacuum tube.. i believe that bolts directly to the bumper, and the bumper itself attaches to this on the sides also (or possibly just through it into the frame horns I forget really)
the vacuum tube itself is undoubtably the lightest peice on that whole thing, a few lbs of round tubing, if that.. it was actually one of the smartest uses of space ive seen on an american car.. hah, newer cars got the 'orb of power' stuffed under a fender somewhere
the tank and bumper support weighs about 45lbs. someone weighed it here a while back and i can say that when i picked up everything after i cut it all out that it weighed at least that. this was on a 75. not too sure about the later years. the headlights are worth about 20lbs too. the frames and support work are very heavy. you can take about 100lbs off the front with not too much trouble. i used a plasma cutter and cut the tube out and left the frame extension in place on each side. there is a large bolt on each side that supports the front end. there is a metal plate in the upper nose that you can tie into for extra support if you need to. you can cut the rear bumper out also. it will save you about 55 lbs. Bee Jay has a thead on it. i think it is in his sig.
i dont know how far you want to go but even with the aluminum accents i have saved well over 100lbs. i would say close to 200lbs in the front and about 60 to 75 in the rear. i cut the rear bumper and went dual mount composite with the spring. i went with the composite front also.
