Default Outer Door Handle ?

Tried to fix my passenger outer door handle. Wouldn't open from the outside. Thought all it needed was adjustment because after pulling the door panel I could see that it had a lot of play in the rod.
When I un-hooked the rod and was turning the piece out some, everything fell from out of the handle into the door.
So this is what I have. Got all the pieces together, no big deal figuring out how it goes back together, but can't get it to stay together.

I know the springs shot but I rigged it to work (ok i gots me a little bubba in me from time to time) but can't figure out what holds this all together. There's no hole or space for a clip ring, so I'm lost.

Any ideas?

The small end of the rivet should be braded. hammer that sucker.

Is braded a word?

I'm watching. I would like to know. My drivers side outer handle droops and when you turn the key in the lock it does not open, and the lock opening in the cylinder does not stay straight. I'm really thinking about replacing all the rods, retainers, lock cylinders, and outer door handle driver's side)

Hey Donnie, I think I have an old handle in my parts box. I'll pull it out tonight and post a pic. Maybe that will help . . . Lane

Thanks guys, just finished putting it back together and it's working great.
It was supposed to be mushroomed out to stay in (thanks wombvette). Just that over the years they wear down and it came loose. The spring was broken but I just rewound it.

So, in the last two days I've got the wipers working, fixed an exhaust leak and the door handle. Not bad fer an old dude. That handle was a %#$&@ to get to everything together and get it back in.

Thanks for the offer Lane, I've been keeping every little piece I come up with because one thing I've learned about Vettes is that one day your buddies gonna need it.

Same problem, I just put up a post about adjustiung the linkage today to see if that's the problem. Don't mean to hijack the thread, but it sounds like the original problem has been solved.

I think the word is peened, but I could be wrong. I might have drilled a small hole for a pin if there was space, we'll see if I have the same problem.

I've had to deal with both doors now on all kinds of opening and closing issues. Turned out every one was an adjustment thing other the this one needing peened to stay together.

Hello
I can understand the word "mushroomed". I would not know what "peening" refereed to.

I am also having door issues with the driver side. It seems like there is an abundance of door problems around.

Same thing, just take a punch and a hammer and wack away. Doesn't take much. It's softer metal than I thought.
