My MSD ignition runs the stock tach fine with the green wire. However when using either the green or white wire with proform 67005 shift light, the light comes on at the correct RPM but flickers badly at idle. Ive tried using zener diode per thier tech instructions, but no change. Any help before I can talk to them during business hours Monday?
I found mine would flicker if the outer housing touched/grounded to the steering column. Sounds weird, but if the shell on the light end touched or if the back touched against the metal dash of the C-2, it flickered. I used a small rubber cushion under it to make sure it didn't touch and it's been fine ever since.
Theyve changed to a plastic base to prevent this now, as they umm...couldnt find a better fix(wtf?). I spoke with them at length and they seem to not have any answers. If the case becomes grounded somehow, the light comes on. They have no idea why mine is flickering. They say they dont have a history of this problem and so mine must be broke.
Summit tech support says it is a problem inherent to them, and, well- its on its way back in exchange for one made my someone else. By all means if yours is working, great, but I really got the feeling that all the monkeying around in the world was not going to make the problem go away.
By the way, kudos to Summit customer support again, those guys are just amazing.
Actually, I don't pay much attention to it anyway. I put it on mine where it could easily be unplugged and removed. I only have factory cable driven tach in it... so accuracy at high RPM leaves a little to be desired. I used the shift light to let me know when I went past 6800rpm so I could start thinking about shifting when it felt right. But it seems like I stay above 6800 rpm a lot and the thing was always on!!
I called it my *shift suggestion* light!!
I pretty much ignore it and killed off the rev limiter too. They annoy me!
I quit making horsepower and risk valve float above about 6500, so thats when I want to shift. This time I got the one that displays the actual RPM in addition to the "shift suggestion" part.
