On my 74, the Distributor was replaced with a newer model and the tach wont work for obvious reasons.. Do they make any sort of converter for this problem? I really hate to have to replace a good working distributor for this, and I really dont want to swap the tach for a later model.
Anyone have any suggestions other than just mounting an aftermarket tach?
I had that problem with my 71 sbc . I ordered a distributer from Star , was only about $120
and it works well . I thought about the tach idea , but I love the stock guage setup . Probably not much more $ than a tach after all done.
Just have your 74 tach converted to an electric tach. It works much better tha nthe old tach drive. I did mine like this and don't regret it at all, plus you lose the cable.
Since 1974 was the last year for cable drive tach, a 75 or 76 tach drops right it, looks exactly the same, and works better than the cable drive tach. I swapped my tach for one out of a 76 and you can't tell the difference.
If it were me, I would buy a used tach-drive distributor at a local swap meet, rebuild it myself [with necessary new parts which you can get at any parts supplier or NAPA], and not go to the trouble of messing with the dash/tach [that's a real PITA to exchange].
Well, I was bored this afternoon so I decided to do something about this situation. I found a cheap tach at Oreilly's and installed it.. What do you guys think?
