Default Rag Joint Replacement

Hey in the middle of replacing the rag joint and got stuck. I got the old one off of the steering box but can get the steering wheel arm to move up or down so I can get rag joint off. Do I have to unbolt the steering box to get off, or how far back should the steering wheel arm move? I have dropped the steering arm for inside the car still do not have enought room to work the rag joint off. What am I missig?

I removed a pivot bolt on the steering box and moved it aside just a little. Then took apart the rag joint assenbly. I removed the bolts from the top portion and the botton portion (spline) and spread the clamps enough to slide them apart. I had enough room then to slide the bottom part of the rag joint up and out, then slid the top part down and out. I then reversed this procedure with the new joint. Hope this helps.

You just took out one bolt from the steering box? I will take a look and see it that looks the same on mine, seems to be two bolts holding it to the frame, but thanks for the input I appreciate it.

It's been a while - I think I did remove both bolts, but I know I did not remove the box (just move it over a little), nor did I remove the steering column. Good Luck.

Default Replaced the rag joint on my 76 recently

Replaced the rag joint on my 76 recently and I did not mess with the steering box. I pulled the steering column out. I think you can do either one. Posts above on Jim Shea info is what you need with step by step instructions. I printed that out and used it, great stuff.

There is particular way and important way to install the rag joint to make sure it is aligned properly and not in a bind. Check Jim Shea's info and or FSM.

Also you will see in Jim Shea's stuff, it is very important not to pry the rag joint apart. If you push the steering column side shaft back up into the collapsible steering column, then the rag joint will have too big of a gap to fill.

Good luck.
