Had some front end work done on my 69. Bushings, tie rods, idler arm, ball joints etc. I was told to get an alignment. On the way home when making a sharp left turn I felt a noise as if something was scraping. Is this because the front end is out of alignment. Thanks
A car out of alignment shouldn't make a scrapping sound. I had some tire squeel due to poor toe adjustment after m front end rebuild but had done the work my self and once I got a better eye-ball alignement, the noise went away. A proper alignement is absolutely necessary fter any significant front end work.
Scraping sounds more like metal hitting metal. Bring the car back to the mechanic.
One question. If you had this done professionally, why didn't they do an alignment for you? Even if your mechanic can't do it in his shop, he should be able to farm it out to complete the rebuild.
Find a shop with a good state of the art rack. Look for Hunter name and a free standing desktop pc with a flat screen monitor, that machine would have been made with in the last decade. Find your cars alignment specs online, front and rear, get advice in here for "preffered settings" and mark them on your spec sheet. Ask if its ok to talk to the alignment tech for a sec. when he pulls your car in. That will get you back in the shop, try to hang out while he works on it, just outside the bay door if its a nice day. Soak every ajustment point on your car with PB blaster a couple times a day or two before you go. You will get more effort from the guy if your out there being friendly with the guy and he dosent have to fight rusty bolts the whole way. After he gets a 4-wheel reading on your car, pull out your specs and show him what you would like to get it as close to as possible. Also when your asking for spec suggestions, decide if you want the best possible tire wear or the best possible handling, they are not the same! Good luck
