Hey there. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the easiest way to manually crank a 454 (in the car) with an automatic transmission. My timing marks fell off and I need to replace them.

Thanks for the help.

crankshaft bolt or flywheel turner if you have a dust shield.......
As long as the belt is tight you can use a breaker bar and one of these two, either a 7/8 or 15/16 socket on the alternator fan nut. Still too hard, remove the plugs and then proceed....

Thanks. Do you know if you can do it by manually rotating the oil pump gear?
71rookie,
If you are asking if you can rotate the engine by spinning the distributor, you would most likely just twist the distributor shaft in two and if the shaft didn't twist off, the second most likely scenario would be that you would strip the gear on the end of the camshaft and/or distributor shaft since it is designed as a drive gear that isn't meant to be driven.
The best place to rotate the engine from is the bolt that holds the harmonic damper to the end of the crankshaft. It's highly unlikely that you would strip the threads or snap that bolt off, especially if the spark plugs are also removed.

You'll likely be surprised how easy the engine turns with no spark plugs. Just don't forget to put them back in, or you'll have trouble starting it.....
