Steering Noise- Help!
Thought it was fog in my rear-veiw mirror. Nope.
I had a new one put one.
It sounded a bit noiser than usual after I had it installed.
Now it whines like a like a pig going to the slaughter house...
Is it a faulty pump, or something worse????
Thanks in advance!
JW :cry
Are you sure that you have the proper amount of GM power steering fluid? Filled to the Hot or Cold mark on the cap stick?
If the above is true, you have a pump that is shot. If you purchase a kit from a GM dealer, the pump is not all that bad to rebuild. The GM shop manual is very complete. The Zip Products websight has a section on rebuilding the pump as well.
I take it from your signature that you have a 1977 Vette. Be sure to use a special puller to draw the pulley off of the pump driveshaft. Also you must use a 3/8-16UNC bolt with a nut and washer to draw the pulley onto the driveshaft. NEVER press the pulley directly onto the driveshaft. You will break a powdered metal plate inside the pump.
Good luck,
Let me know what you find.
