Thanks everyone. This whole idea of reinstalling the a/c is giving me a headache. I am disappointed however, about the wrong parts installed in my 1970. I have some head scratching to do before I spend any more money. It's going to be a long hot summer!!!
Don't give up hope. Assuming that your condenser (the thing in front of the radiator) is usable, you can get the rest of the parts you need from a number of sources online and it shouldn't cost more than 800-1000 in total to put your system back to the way it should be, maybe less if you have any of the part you will need like compressor, brackets, etc.
