Would seem to be easier to go with a 4L60 that is ecm controlled. A 4L60 is the same as 700R4.

Yes, a 700R4 will bolt up. 1 bolt hole will not be used. Also, you will need a small adaptor that fits into the crank for the nose of the torque convertor.

4l60 is not computer controlled. 4l60E is computer controlled. LS computer will run the 4l60e, just make sure you get the right year. I think there are a few electrical changes from year to year on the transmissions.

Yes. Get the computer, harness and trans from the same year and save yourself some headaches. Better yet, find a wrecked car and just buy it. That way you get all sorts of little things included that will nickel and dime you to death when doing a swap.

A good affordable route would be a 4.8/5.3/6.0 from a truck and put the car front accessories on it. Motors with transmissions from trucks can be had for about $1k.

thats fine but remember how low the truck pan sits, youll either swap it out for a vette pan or cut it like i did.Especially if your car is lowered.

Good point. You'll still come out way ahead over buying an LS1. People think they are worth gold for whatever reason.

How are the 4.8/5.3/6.0 for HP??? Mod-ability ???
Original thoughts were LS1/2/6
ALSO, how does the tranny case size compare b/w 700R4 and 4L60E???
This all is planned for an 82 (BUT to replace the stock 700r4 to handle an LS1/2/6 hp)

The truck motors are the same design as an LS1, just different bolt on parts (intake, accesories, oilpan). Heads, cams, timing covers, intakes, accesories, oil pans etc...all switch between the motors tho. Basically, anything you can do to a LS1/2/6 you can do to the truck motors. A 5.3 truck motor is 295hp stock...not sure on the others, but they have some solid numbers as well. Most truck motors also have a cast iron block.

As for strength...my buddy runs a Nova with a stock bottom end 5.3 and single turbo setup at 15PSI. It runs a 10.1 and puts about 700hp to the rear wheels.

700R4 and 4L60E are the same size.

What brownc said. But the 6.0 LQ4/9 motors have a lot more capability for upgrades.
If weight is an issue, the L33 all aluminum 5.3 truck motors make almost as much hp as an LS1 but at about half the price. Milage is usually lower too.

If you'll notice on your keyboard, the $ and 4 are the same key. So, you could accidentally type $l60e! In other words, they aren't cheap. It's very similar to the 700R4, just electronically controlled....which is probably worth it if you are running the LS electronics. You can change line pressure, shiftpoints, downshift pressures etc right from your laptop.

The last $l60e I built: Upgraded sunshell, z-clutches, big band, trans-go shift kit, new solenoids and harness, 3K hughes convertor, a replacement 4 pinion planetary (used) and normal rebuild parts was about $1300 in parts. That was through a connection who got me the stuff at his cost and didn't charge me for labor.
