Default Power Steering Control Valve

Hi,

I've read a lot of posts about removing the pitman arm from the power steering control valve, put I'm still having no luck doing so. I bought a pitman arm puller, but I can't see how it could possibly fit. I have a pickle fork, but it sounds like it's not a good idea to use it, although I've tried, just beating on it "lightly." I don't see how the pitman arm can move using either of these tools -- it seems like it's pretty solid. Do I need to remove or loosen something else? I even thought about removing the pitman arm, but I don't have a tool large enough for the nut.

The arrow is at the position where I'm inserting the pickle fork, correct?

Thanks,
Jim

That is where it goes. Don't be shy on this. It takes quite a bit of force. A big hammer is usually needed. It will pop.

I would go in 180 degrees from your arrow and hit it hard a few times and it will let go.

When I redid my front end last winter I used a small tie rod remover on All of my joints including the one you are trying to get. I was not having much luck with the Pickle fork either!

I'm pretty sure I had to turn my steering to just the right angle to get the tie rod remover on that one, but it worked.

Jim,
Follow this thread: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-t...itman-arm.html

Buy the Tie rod end & Pitman Arm puller for COMPACT CARS OEM # 25297, I think I bought mine at autozone. It fits, look at my 82 pics in mentioned thread; you must turn the steering wheel while it is up on jacks to find the sweet spot where the tool, your hands and a wrench can all fit (trust me, there is a spot where all this will clear the frame that is in the way). Once you start to turn the driving bolt, it will !POP! right off...
This meathod is so easy and you do not have to beat anything!
Send me a message and I will try to help you some more Pat

Autozone had both the normal size puller AND the one for compacts. Naturally I picked the wrong one Will try again tomorrow.

Thanks for all your responses!

I just removed mine today. It took some hard shots with a lump hammer and the fork and it finally popped. I'm going to put the power steering set up on ebay. Centerlink, pitman arm and power steering pump.

I took back the big puller I bought at Autozone and exchanged it for the compact one. I still didn't think it was going to fit, but after turning the steering wheel all the way to one side, I was able to fit the puller on. The fit was still tight, but luckily I had a ratcheting wrench to turn the puller. The valve came off with a bang after a few turns!

Thanks again everyone,
Jim
