I am putting on a new RPM intake and was thinking of not hooking up the heater hose. Should I just plug up the hole in the intake or do you need to run a short piece of hose back to the water pump?
I've disconnected the heater hoses on several old cars (I lived in Florida) and always ran a short loop-back hose. Don't know if it is critical but it seems like a logical solution - smooth water flow..

I live in NJ also and have not had to use the defroster but heat you bet. I have driven on some mornings that are pretty cold. Sure is nice to have a little heat.
BTW yes I agree with others just the plugs are needed. No bypass hose.
If the heater core is damaged or plugged, you can just block off the outlets. If you just don't like the way that hose is routed over the A/C compressor (don't know if that's the reason for your question, or not), just reroute that hose under the compressor. If you do that, you can also put a lever-type water shut-off valve in that line [below the compressor] and it will hardly be noticible.
