Go with a hydraulic roller cam, dont have to worry about the low level of zinc in oil, that will wipe out your cam lobes.

Comp is a highly reputable firm and I have had no problem with their products though I am currently using a Schneider product. That said, your satisfaction with any cam selection is only as good as your ability to
select the appropriate cam for the engine you have not the one you wish you had. Good luck

I have run a variety of solid flat tappet cams from Comp. I have always used their lifters. If you follow the proper break in and use the proper oil it should be no problem. I have had good luck in the last 15 years with their products.

yah im using Dyno2003 and COMP Cam quest to help me find the best cam. i have 2 engine builds in mind an 350 (4.000x3.484) and an 377 (4.000x3.750) the 377 is just like the 383 except the 383 has an .03 over bore.

i was asking being i have herd people saying they hate COMP cams
they seem to look like an ok company. thanks for you input guys.

I just had the flat tappet vs roller conversation with my engine builder this morning. I have the old style block so to go roller it require those retro-roller lifters so I'm looking at a price diff of ~$500.00. My budget is tight. We got on the conversation of oil and break in etc. He told none of the production oils have enough sulfer or zinc an more, not even Rotella. He told me that regular use of STP Oil treatment is how he solves the issue. This guy has a long term local rep for knowing what he is doing so I plan to go with the flat tappet and follow his advice. He is recommending a crane cam and lifter kit and I gave me the go ahead this morning. I kinda get 's about the STP thing but he swears by it....so i guess we will see.

ps; Apologies if I hijacked the thread. I really don't have a comment on the Comp stuff as I have no experience with it.

actually i was just thinking about that i think im going to have to go to flat tappet being the blocks im looking at are from the 1970s early 80s im 98% sure non of them are roller lifter capable.

yah i don't want to have an wiped lobe on this thing being my budget is very small.

http://www.cranecams.com/pdf/548e.pdf (intresting info i found on Crane Cams web sight oh is COMPETITION CAMS and COMP CAMS one and the same ???? i know its a stupid question but i don't know

Nothing but good luck with Comp Cams in the past. Right now I'm running a Comp Cam Pro Magnum 1.6.1 roller rockers set up.

Ryan, just a heads up because I remember from your other threads you don't have a block yet. It would be wise to get an '87 and newer block if you're going to go roller.

I personally am going with a retrofitted roller cam just because of the ease of mind. Last thing I want to worry about is a wiped lobe.

My car was treated with a comp cams camshaft back in 1990, and when I took my engine apart few months ago, I was amazed how the camshaft was in such a great condition! .. I expected at least one wiped lobe, but it turned out to be in great shape.

i think you may be correct because i was looking for prices at Crane and all i got was nothing no prices on anything no buy now thing nothing. from the sounds of it im just going to go with COMP because of the ease of selecting and finding a cam.

I have run Comp Cams componets in everything from stock 350's to 706 drag engine. And have had very little problems with there parts. IMO Comp is the best you can buy.

I believe I read somewhere Comp grinds all the ZO6 and ZR1 cams for gm.

If I was going Flat tappet I would probably use Crower. They are a high quality product. My hydraulicr oller, lifters, rockers and timing set are all Comp. Good company. Only problem I ever had with them was a set of lifters that had a couple that wouldn't stay pumped up. Had been sitting waiting for a build for almost 3 years. They accepted a return and replaced them with no problem.

My 383 Build top end was 200cc Brodix, and Full roller Comp. assembly. Rockers are Pro magnum's.

IMO the comp haters had a failed Top build , trying for too much power using a flat tappet cam and lifters. No or low zinc oil during breakin. Recipe for disaster in the past 4-6 yrs.
This is roller assembly years, Or risk wasting time and Money.
