I have a 70 L-46 engine I will be rebuilding. Is this kit pretty much all I need:This rebuild kit contains rings, rod bearings, main bearings, and a rebuilder's gasket set
Depends on the engine's condition and the machining that may be necessary once everything is checked out.I wouldn't order anything until everything is measured and it is determined what parts can be reused or machined, and what must be discarded. You will likely need a lot more pieces than what you have mentioned.
If it's the original (unrestored) engine, the cylinder walls have significant wear; then they will need to be machined (ridge reamed, as a minimum). If the bores are outside of service specifications [worn too large for the existing pistons], the block should be bored out and oversized pistons purchased to fit. The rings will be sized for those pistons. So, again, you need to disassemble it to find out what you have and what you will need to do...before buying parts. If your engine has been overhauled and/or there is very little cylinder wear [and the pistons have not been replaced already], you may be able to use the rings you purchased.
w/ both tfi & 7t1 ... don't settle on or order a piece until you KNOW what's in there now ... and ...
... if you do NOT have to rebuild it exactly to L46 specs, then you might consider a different piston (to lower compression a bit / use low-drag thin rings) and consider a different cam (many newer grinds tailored to lower comp & today's crap gas). Nothing against L46 as it's a favorite of mine; but things have changed.
As for crap gas ... I oppose corn-based ethanol transport fuels being forced upon me & their programs expanded with my tax $.
Just today I listened to Tom Vilsack new US Ag Sec interview on RFDTV ... he said he is working w/ EPA to IMMEDIATELY bump existing gas retail to replace 10% ethanol (E10) with 12% to 13% (E12-E13) with a short term goal of 15% ethanol (E15). He said it & I heard him. Vilsack has a strong midwest farm background (read corn), is a lawyer & was Gov of Iowa also (read corn) and he was an early Dem candidate for US Presidency but he folded 2/2007. He knows the pro-corn interests & $. He is on record as strongly supporting States' claims of eminent domain for redevelopment purposes to areas defined as slum or blighted. If he has his way, he'll let the State take your property if it thinks it & its cronies can build a Chuckie Cheeze on it that'll bring in a bigger tax base; it's that damn simple! And if they keep tinkering with the ethanol content, it may be OK for newer systems, but fuel for our old iron could quickly become unavailable ... more quickly than I had imagined just 6 months back.
with dont order anything yet untill you know what it looks like inside. all the books i have read and what ever one seems to indicate that i have asked about my current Rebuild prodject
