I am restoring a 1968 corvette and came up with some questions:
1. Does anyone know where I can buy a kit for the mounting bolts and the threads?
2. This is probably a really stupid question but is the dust shield and stabilizing bar specially coated or is it paint? If paint what type?
3. Whats the purpose of removing the rotor from the hub? Where do I find if the rotor is in or out of spec (rusted can't find any numbers)?
4. I bought this as a project with half for this already taken apart so I don't know if the front is normal. Are the pictures below normal or are the brackets bent?
That bar is a 68 only piece, and looks pretty solid. Whatever you do, do not acid dip that piece...yes the bumper brackets are bent.
As for mounting bolts, those are std Uss coarse 1/2" grade 3 or 5 bolts. Your local hardware store has them or if you want the correct head markings, then check out the supporting vendor sites who sell Corvette parts.
You do NOT need to remove the hubs from the rotors. Take them to a parts store with a machine shop or even a muffler/brake shop and have them inspected and turned or machined.
Hi 76C,
The brake dust shields were zinc plated in 1968.
The stabilizer shaft could be either natural (forged with a blue-gray scale) or painted low gloss black.
Regards,
Alan
Thanks. Are there any kits where i could do the zinc plating myself?
Does anyone know where i can find what to mic the rotors at to see if they are in or out of spek?

Eastwood Paints has 4 step fake zinc plating paint kits
Expensive but look pretty good (and has a clearcoat)
To do zinc for real you'd need electroplating dip tanks and stuff $$$$
what is not good about some plating materials like zinc or maybe cadmium is that they oxidize and loose their finish over time. I dont know how the resto guys keep real plating looking good over time? except maybe clear powder coat or something?
Hi 1976C,
The front and rear dust shields are being reproduced well, complete with part number and Delco Moraine logo, if that interests you. The problem in re-doing yours may be that they're pitted, and that may matter to you.

Alan
