I don't know what the OP actually made, but this is a simple solution.
Use a large piece of cardboard to make a template which fits across the back, snug at the top, but at a slight angle to provide some space at the bottom (~ about 3")
Use the template to cut a 3/8" timber panel. I used MDF board, but any available plank the right size would do.
Cut out holes for speakers... I used 2 6x9" three ways.
Add a power amp if available.
Fit loop pile carpet of same colour over exposed panel.
Fit the speakers and fit the panel in.
Simple, low cost and looks clean and tidy.
