For one, the tape doesn't seal the threads...the sealing is done on the mating surface of the flare and the nut. If the flare has a crack, and can't seal, teflon tape will not prevent gas leaking...if anything, the tape strands may work their way into the carb bowl and eventually into the carb body or metering block. This is a long shot, but a possibility.

Thanks. I understand the logic there..if the flare is not structurally sound gravity will pull the leak straight down.
This was a very informational thread. (and the other one where I suggested use of tape for the same issue). ...thanks to all involved I learnt' something today
mmkay, I tightened up the fitings and it sealed.. must be spectre isn't too bad.. the fittings were not chromed on the inside.BTW... they taped them off.
