I get a REALLY strong smell of gas when i run the car. i thought that it was running too rich but the fuel injection kit controls the fuel and air and the O2 sensor says it is running like it is suppose to and when i put my hand over the tail pipe i dont get the gas smell on my hands. i have looked everywhere starting from the fuel tank all the way to the engine for a fuel leak and there is not one. i think i know what it is but im not sure yet and i wanted to see if anyone comes to same conclusion as me. i will attempt to fix what i think is the problem this weekend and see if it is what i think it is. when i say that there is a strong gas smell i mean it smells like someone spilled a five gallon bucket of gas in my garage. oh and i have a stainless steel gas tank with an internal electric fuel pump and it has an edelbrock pro flo efi kit on it.
I have a gas smell now also after changing over to EFI. I ran some new Braided fuel lines and I traced it down to the fuel lines. Not leaking just smeling of gas. I wrapped them in toilet paper to see if they are leaking and no leaks. It is just that the lines smell. I posted here about this and the Russell fuel lines seem to have this problem. I am putting in more hard line and changing over to Aeroquip braided lines.
Have you checked the evap. canister (if still hooked up)?
are you refering to the fuel tank vapor canister that is mounted under the master cylinder in the engine compartment? if so that is what i am thinking is causing the strong gas smell. i looked at it and found that the hose that is suppose to go to the intake was disconnected, cut and shoved down behind the canister. im gonna reconnect it tonight and run it tomorrow and see if it fixes the problem.
Yes - this was the cause of my gas smell, though I don't have efi...I'll bet this fixes it.
well i really hope this is my problem that i have been having. if it does fix it then i will be kicking myself in the @%% because i thought it was my sidepipes that was making my car run to rich because the O2 sensor was too far from the head but once i got my new exhaust on the car and the O2 sensor is now only 4" past the collector on my short ram horn headers it still has that bad gas smell. what is really gonna suck is if this does fix my problem then next year i KNOW that i will want to order hooker side pipes again and i am going to have to explain to my wife why i want to order them for a third time.
i am on my lunch break and havent been home yet to see if this fixes my problem and it is killing me to know if it will fix my problem. anyways if that vapor hose was unhooked and the car is running how bad would the fumes be?
ive been slowwwwwwly building this car for several years and since i got the engine in back in 2005 and started for the first time i have had this problem and always thought it was something that i did wrong and couldnt figure out what it was. anyways i am going to fix it as soon as i get home today and see what happens. i am so excited right now and i cant wait to get home today.
Well I hooked the hose up to the intake and it made a HUGE difference in the gas smell BUT because it was pulling so much extra air into the intake it was making the engine run lean so the fuel injection started dumping more gas to compensate. Tomorrow I will hook it up to the air cleaner and try again to see how it works out and see if I can get it to work without acting like a vacuum leak.
I looked in the Chiltons tonite, looks like efi hose routing from canister to engine is different than for a carb. You might be able to run through either a T in the pcv line, or use one of the two connection pcv valves if running through the air cleaner idea doesn't work.
