Hey everyone. I have a 76 federal model that I need to have pass smog in CA. Does anyone have a recommended test station I should go to for this? The car runs clean, but it only has the EGR system and not the EFE and Smog Pump.
You will need whatever is required on a federal emissions vehicle for 76. There should be a smog diagram under the hood that lists the required smog equipment. If you do need it, you'll have to install the parts. If it is too expensive, hard to find, etc. you can take it to a smog referree and might be able to get it waived, i've never done that before though so i can't give you any advice there. My car is federal emissions as well but I have all the stock smog equipment.

the federal 76 didnt come with a smog pump. it had the EGR system the air cleaner with the heat riser for quick warm ups and the catalytic converter and that is it for smog equipment for your car.
If it was me, I would pay the fee and have the car tested. Assuming it fails, get a list from the guy of what has to be done and if any additional equipment is required. And then go from there with help from this forum.
You probably won't have any problem passing the 'running' test [at speed]; your difficulty will be passing it at idle. Your best chance is to set up idle to run as low speed and as lean as possible. You can also retard the spark a bit more than called for on the emissions label; that will cause the engine to run a bit hotter at idle and burn off more HC's. Get your engine warmed up, then set the timing and idle as described...just before taking it to the inspection station. Good luck.

Is the smog for test only? If so if it doesn't pass you can get help from the state to pay to fix it up to $500.00

As long as the CAT works well, it will hide a lot of evils.
go to the CA DMV smog website. There used to be counties that were smog exempt. You just moved there, submit a change of address to that flea bag hotel you live in and register it to that address and of course you are smog exempt. then when you get your life together and move back in to your original address, change the address back until you have another run of bad luck 2 years later.

They will check your timing to see if it is set as shown on the label under the hood...factory spec for that year.
