I intend to "bond" a L88 hood scoop to the hood of a stock BB 73 hood. Regardless of year, what suggetions do you have for this project as far as materials, fastening method etc. Thanks
I used an Eckler L-88 scoop on my stock 72 hood when I painted the car in '94. I used polyester resin and fiberglass matt.
After prepping the hood and scoop with 36 grit paper, I "glued" the scoop to the hood with resin using several sheet metal screws to temporally secure it. I laid down a few layers of resin and mat along the seams and blended the inside edge of the hood with the scoop in the same fashion. Finished everything off with filler and primer surfacer.....
Bond with Evercoat Vette Panel Adheasive or Lord Fusor, both available at an automotive paint suppy. Hold in place with screws over night. Remove screws and counter sink holes then cover the screw holes as well as the scoop edges with reasin and mat. Let cure over night then block sand with 36 grit. Finish the repair with the Evercoat vette panel 880 adheasive instead of body filler. I must say the yellow vette looks to be a very pofessional job and very wicked looking.
How much extra carb clearence does this modification provide?
enough clearance to fit a 3" air filter on a Holley 4150 sitting on an Edelbrock Airgap manifold in a small block!
Prior to fitting the L88 scoop on my stock 68 bonnet, I used a drop base aircleaner with a 1.5" element and could only just close the bonnet. Air cleaner would hit underside of stock bonnet under torque twist.
Now there's plenty of clearance with a 3" element on a stock air cleaner base.
