Default 78 carb help

My recently purchased 78 is in need of a carb. Since the motor is not original I am simply looking for a rebuilt quadrajet in the same era (ie 76, 77, 78). I have found a lot of places online that offer rebuilt carbs, but I am not sure who I can trust. Any recommendations? Thanks

Do you want to try it yourself? Here's a link for a basic rebuild www.4wheelnoffroad.com/qjet.html PG.

I would love to try a rebuild myself since that is one of the reasons I bought the car at the ripe old age of 41 (I miss owning a car that I can work on). I guess I'm trying to relive my high school years. Anyway the existing carb is not original and has a warped air horn and throttle body. Not worth the time or trouble to deal with so I thought I would look for a rebuilt so I could enjoy the car this summer. Looking for a whole new motor for a fall/winter project.

For just a stock rebuild, buy a kit, a new float and fuel filter, a non-plastic bucket/ tub and a gallon of lacquer thinner. Disassemble everything (don't remove throttle plates), seating all adjustment screws while counting and recording the turns before removing. Soak all non-plastic parts in the lacquer thinner, using a non-plastic brush to clean. Use a rubber bulb to force thinner through all passages (wear goggles). Re-assemble replacing the old parts with the new parts and re-setting all the adjustments as they were (as you recorded them). PM me for an easy choke set up procedure. Unless there are problems, that should have you all set.

God bless, Sensei

Oops, I was writing this while you were responding. You may be able to find a good rebuildable core at a bone yard.

At this point I don't want to waste my time with doing a rebuild myself. I would love to just find a rebuilt quadrajet from a reputable source and enjoy the car until I can do a new motor in the fall.

Most of the commercial rebuilders make McCarburetors that are less than desirable. I have heard good things about Jet Performance carbs though.

Default Looking for a reputable source!

No problem with that, your original carb should have been #'s 1704582xx (on the drivers side)
you might even try NAPA for a replacement. a1sensei and I both believe that a properly set up Q-Jet will give you all the HP you need today and then when you upgrade the motor you will still have a great carb.

The number off the carb on this car is 17056206, what does this tell you? I thought it meant is was a 1976 GM quadrajet automatic, am I incorrect?
