You can make one the right size from one of those old plastic paint scraper/ putty knives that you have hidden with all your old paint brushes and dried up cans of house paint.

Nah! You can grab the shift handle and move it from reverse to 3-4 gate while a helper adjusts from below. You can even get a lot better adjustment out of it that way if you have a worn or sloppy shifter. It's easy to feel when the adjustment is right.
If the shifter is worn or sloppy, using the gauge doesn't give you a good adjustment.
