I am about to remove the 4 speed borg warner tranny in my 75 vette, can anyone recommend a good tranny jack? and for how much and who sells it? I hope this will only be a one time event.. thanks
You really don't need one. They are not that heavy. I had my Muncie in/out many times without one. If you do want one though.
Do you have the car on a lift or on jackstands. When I got my lift I bought a tall one for auto transmissions. I bought it from Greg Smith equipment in Deleware. I think I paid about 80 or 90. I got it in a package deal. I think he also has some low rise ones also. Check out his website. http://www.gregsmithequipment.com/Tr...Jacks-s/27.htm

I am a old fart and I remember pulling a trannie out of a 50 Ford on the side of a hill in Ohio on Thanksgiving weekend (light snow). In later years the first time I used a trannie jack I thought I was cheating!!

Boy we could have used a trans jack this weekend here. We installed a new clutch in my sons Camaro Z28. Let me tell you that T-56 is one heavy mother when you are not used to hefting one around. We used the floor jack but it is still a lot of work.
IMHO a tranny jack on a T-10 might be more trouble than its worth. The T-10 only weighs about 60 pounds,a second pair of hands for a beer or two would be my preference if I couldn't do it myself.
Here's the place I usually have to wrestle a T-10 out of,no way to use any kind of jack on this one!

I haven't used either of these but I would think the first one that fits on a floor jack would be harder to position since the front two wheels on the jack are not casters.
WOW, thanks for everyone's input. I do not have a lift and I will be by myself, my concern is not too much getting it out, but putting it back in. Once i put the clutch and pressure plate in I want to line the splines up perfectly so i'm not jerking everything around when I try to re-install. Years ago I did the same thing (stronger and more patient then), I'd like to make things easy if possible. I saw the scissor type, the platform looked small, Duke when you used this, it held the tranny ok? (I know it doesn't weigh much, but even at 60 -100lbs, i'd rather not have the thing falling off onto my hand ... LOL)
One last thing, most people I talk to about removing this tranny advise that they have done so many times... I have to ask.. Why does it need to come out so often?
My brother just bought the first one that attaches to a floor jack. We used it when replacing a clutch in a Tracker of all things. It was adiquate, but honestly if I had the extra money I'd buy the other one. The **** is somewhat clumsy to operate.
Want the cheeeeeeepest solution??? a 12" piece of 2x6 with a hole in the middle, through which is placed a 3/8' carriage bolt, drill/tap the center of the jack cup with a 3/8-16 tap, screw it down, and call it a day....been using that setup for some 20 years now....
Jeez... Just buy the cheapest [China-built] floor jack at Auto-Zone, put the plate under the lowest point on the bottom of the case and hold the tail housing while you jack it up or down. What's the problem?
Answer to your question...$20. [and then you have an extra, light-duty floor jack]
Thought I was the only one.......
But mine was more high tech. 1' x 2' piece of plywood. Bolt through the center. My jack already had a bolt hole from a removable jack cup.
Then 2 pieces of 2 X 4 screwed into the plywood to hold my ROD upright.

Can't beat that for low cost solution. What I found useful with the scissors type jack is that I can put my pneumatic ratchet on the screw and raise and lower it with ease. I’ve removed plenty of Muncies with no jack, but that was in my younger days. I installed a TKO in my 78', and never would have gotten that beast raised up without the jack.

I did a th350 once by laying the tranny on my stomach, skotching under the car and bench pressing it up into place,.....alone. I know I was nuts, but I was 18, and money was tight. No funds for a jack then.
