Default Seeking 355sbc build advice

Got another build project going and would like others thoughts.

It will eventually go into a 1976 with these existing parts:

-Fresh TH400 w/B&M kit
-Fresh rear end w/ 3.70 gears
-2400 stall TC
- Dewitt w/ spall fans

engine wise, here is basicly what I have ready to go:

010 cast 4 bolt main bored .030 over and decked flat (.003)
forged crank assy with flat top speed pro piston kit
MSD HEI dist w/7.5 amp module (all in by 2600rpm)
Pete jackson gear drive assy
Milodon 7qt street/strip pan
new std vol oil pump
hooker headers
670 holley SA
edelbrock rpm intake
All ARP bolts
March serp kit

Heres what I planned to finish it with:

AFR 180cc, 65cc, straight plug heads #AFR-1034 (est 9.5-1 CR?)
All AFR adviced Felpro gaskets
Com Cams XR282HR Roller cam kit (#12-432-8)
**specs are 230/236 dur
.340 intake lobe lift
.347 exh. lobe lift
110 LCA
1.6 Harland sharp roller rockers (intake and exhaust?)
Tall AFR valve covers
Auto lite 3910 plugs

Does this combo sound like a good weekend street/strip plan?? 400+HP/400+ ftlbs torq is what I'm after. I'm still uncertain which AFR to get; 180 or 195cc? I'm thinking the 180s are better for velocity. I have no issue with a choppy idle or putting 92oct ane fuel in it. I do have power brakes though.

Thanks for any thoughts, Hopefully I provided enough info for good feedback, Check back in the morning, have too work now..

Your build sounds similar to my last one. However I'm not sure about the cam selection and will have to let other comment on that. I went with a CC 262XE and am happy with it. If it were me then I'd go with the 180cc heads and a hi-volume, standard pressure oil pump.

Never thought I would ever hear myself say this but due to the flow numbers of the new AFR Eliminator line I wouldn't put the 195's on a 350ci.

They flow the same as my previous Vic Jrs which made 550HP on a 406ci with a big solid roller cam. You may have a mismatch unless you are planning a 7500RPM + motor

That motor is close to the one at the AFR website (see dyno tests). Same comp cam and 9.5 CR. They use a 750 Holley however. That combination dyno'd @450 hp. with the 180 street heads. Check it out.

Thanks, I was leaning towards the 180cc but I saw alot of builds on the web were people had the 195afr on 350-355s. I thought it would be a good move if I decide to ever make it a 383cid. I currently have a flat tappet XE268 cam and like it pretty good. Maybe I'll bump down to the roller equiv (duration wise) and go with the XR276HR. I do want it to be streetable.

well I'll be safe and stay with the 180cc. Those 195 flow number are crazy. even the 180 is probably more than enough. Thats 406 you built sounds fun

Which ratio would you suggest all 1.5s, all 1.6s, or do the 1.6 int / 1.5exh split?? Thanks!

I will, thanks for the info. I've see a ton of build sheets now but not sure if I saw that one.

Everyone keeps poping my bubble on that

I just like that sound.. even if it uses more energy to turn. Kinda like those that want the lummpy idle..

Thanks though, I did ask

Default delete gear drive

quized your proposed cam-valve train.

I see No reason why you might need gear drive; not even close.

Unless a particular valvetrain requires gear drive, there are several reasons (both tech & aesthetic) why I would never install one.

When eyes roll at someone's whiny ride, let it be someone else.

A top quality timing chain set from Cloyes, Rollmaster etc is plenty.

Dunno which style pan? ... but many street-strip pans kinda deep ... OE C3 sbc pan only about 7" deep. Look at a road race style pan.

OK I'll toss the gear drive on the shelf and buy a new roller chain.

With that being said, (now that everyone is happy ), Any reccomendations on this roller rocker set-up ratio? David vizards book reccomends a 1.6 intake with a 1.5 exhaust. I've read elsewhere the AFR only need all 1.5 since they flow so well. Thanks, I'll look into the pan too.
