Default check my timing please

Ok,
New HEI is in. I read all of the timing papers and just wanted to make sure I have everything correct.

I used the Mr Gasket recurve kit that lars recommended and put in the gold HEI springs.

Now with the vacuum hose disconnected at 2500 rpms my dial back light says it pegs out at 36 degrees. at idle it is 15 degrees with the vacuum still disconnected. when i connect the hose to manifold vacuum timing goes to 31 degrees indicated 16 inches of vacuum on the advance.

my limited experience in tuning cant find anything out of sorts when driven.

it is a big block if that makes any difference. All of the timing papers specifically reference SBC but nothing specific on bbs

thanks

You're good to go. However, if you find any knocking at WOT in the rpm range of ~2000 to 3000, go to a stronger spring on the centrifugal advance. Depending on your cam and compression ratio, having all centrifugal in by 2,400 may be too early.

This sounds like the way I set mine up too. I pulled the springs on mine, revved the motor up a little and set the timing to 36 with no vacuum advance. I put the springs back and tested til I got mechanical advance all in at around 2500 or so. I then connected the vacuum advance and that is where it stayed at. I test drove the car to be sure there was no surging at cruise and no knock at WO. If all is good you are set. I was working on a small block but I would think the same applies to BB.

Baxom, what distributor did you use? I see that you are getting 21 degrees of mechanical advance. I can only get 16 out of my stock HEI and I've been trying to figure out how to get more mechanical out with the stock weights. Thanks Jim

So you are getting all 36 @ 2500 rpms? What is you total advance with vac hooked up and @ what RPM? I have a BB but running an MSD. I have 18 @ idle and 36 around 3300 with vac disconnected. My power seems to fall off a littl to early with where I am sitting at especially with the big solid flat tappet cam and aluminum head combo that I have. With VAC hooked up I am at 56 total all in @ 3300 no pinging so I may be on the conservative side.

Thanks
Wade
